HEALROAD Project: promoting self-healing

26 September 2017 | Brussels, Belgium

A main priority for the road sector is to optimise the performance of the road network. This also means extending the infrastructure’s lifetime while dealing with current challenges (i.e. higher traffic demand, climate change, increase of heavy goods vehicles, scarcity of funding, etc). A new and cost-effective solution to face these challenges is the development of the induction heating technique for the pavement.

The HEALROAD Project, co-funded by INFRAVATION, aims at overcoming the technical barriers for the future industrialisation and market uptake of self-healing asphalt mixes via induction heating.  The research of the project is focused on five specific parameters:

Bitumen properties
Induction heating time
Maximum heating temperature
Effect of ageing and successive damage-healing series
Up-scaling/recyclability of the mixture

The consortium is organising a workshop on 26 October at the new duraBASt facilities in Cologne, Germany. The meeting will provide further technical details and a private visit to the HEALROAD demonstration area.
